This is an exceptional opportunity for a dynamic, forward-thinking leader to guide a large and complex department through a period of transition toward renewed excellence in research, teaching, and collegial governance.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at FIU is home to a group of about 80 faculty engaged in research and teaching across pure and applied mathematics, statistics, mathematics education research, and interdisciplinary fields. The department has long-standing master's programs and a growing doctoral program, and at the same time serves thousands of undergraduates annually who take mathematics and statistics courses as part of their general education requirements. As such, the department has a significant service-teaching mission that spans STEM and non-STEM disciplines and is integral to the student success outcomes of the college and university.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic leadership for and administrative oversight of the department's research, teaching, and service missions, while developing a strategic vision in alignment with FIU's mission, the College of Arts, Sciences & Education, and University priorities.

  • Foster interdisciplinary collaboration with emerging areas such as mathematical data science, applied mathematics, computational statistics, machine learning, and AI.
  • Oversee and encourage curricular innovation in undergraduate and graduate programs including FIU's newer offerings such as the Mathematical Data Science major while ensuring rigorous standards and effective pedagogy.
  • Cultivate a supportive and collegial departmental climate that supports faculty, staff, and students.
  • Build consensus across different perspectives while promoting transparent communication and effective governance.

Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in Mathematics, Statistics, or a closely related field.
  • An outstanding record of scholarly achievement and teaching that merits appointment at the rank of full professor with tenure.
  • Demonstrated experience in academic leadership, with evidence of successfully addressing complex organizational challenges.
  • Strong communication and consensus-building skills.
  • Capacity to lead a department through cultural and organizational change.

The Ideal Candidate:
