About the Job

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Minnesota Duluth invites applications for a Research Professional 2. The University of Minnesota Duluth is a mid-sized regional comprehensive public university of about 9,000 students located in Duluth, MN on the shore of Lake Superior. The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry resides within the Swenson College of Science and Engineering and offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Chemistry and Biochemistry. The department has approximately 300 undergraduate majors, 30 graduate students, and provides service education to over 1,000 students per year.

This 12-month, 100%-time, in-person position will oversee various departmental instrumentation including our NMR laboratory, manage cost center accounts associated with that instrumentation, and assist department faculty in research laboratory management tasks. This Researcher will report to the Department Head and work with a team of other departmental research professionals, graduate students, and faculty to ensure smooth functioning of a wide range of research instrumentation. Primary daily responsibilities will include ensuring students and faculty have access to functioning instrumentation in a safe and productive laboratory environment, managing administration and budgeting of accounts associated with each instrument, and analyzing samples for internal and external clients.

Duties and Responsibilities Include:

  • NMR Laboratory Management (40%)
    • Provide daily maintenance and upkeep of our Bruker 400 MHz NMR
    • Manage the internal and external NMR cost center accounts
    • Interface with internal and external clients and run samples for those clients as needed
    • Update and keep SOPs and training manuals, and train students, faculty, and researchers to use the instruments
    • Keep track of university Environmental Health & Safety guidelines to ensure the lab is run in an efficient and safe manner
  • Research Instrumentation Management (20%)
    • Work with faculty liaisons to keep other departmental research instrumentation in working order for faculty and students
    • Build and maintain internal and external cost center accounts for research instrumentation
    • Interface with internal and external clients and run samples for those clients as needed
  • Management of Research Laboratories (30%)
    • Order supplies, write SOPs, train undergraduates, and provide other day-to-day lab management tasks for research faculty in the Department as assigned by current faculty supervisor. For example:
      • Prepare and maintain common lab reagents, media, buffers, and stocks
      • Ensure proper waste disposal, autoclaving, and lab cleanliness
      • Maintain and organize shared laboratory spaces, equipment, and storage (fridges, freezers, growth chambers, incubators, etc.)
  • Other duties that support the smooth functioning of departmental research laboratories as assigned (10%)

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS or BA in Chemistry or related field and 2 years of a mix of education and experience working with chemistry instrumentation, including NMR, or a combination of education and relevant work experience to equal at least six years
  • Computer skills in navigating web-based tools, word processing, and spreadsheets
  • Experience in MS Office and Google Suite

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS in Chemistry or related field
  • Experience in laboratory management
  • Experience with NMR, GCMS, LC, FTIR, DSC, and other instrumentation
  • Experience in QA/QC work and/or high precision analytical methods
  • Experience with data analysis in R or python
  • Multi-tasker with the ability to move quickly between different tasks and the ability to juggle requests from multiple stakeholders at once
  • Experience managing larger projects and meeting deadlines
  • Experience working with diverse groups
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Experience managing budgets and cost centers
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $4,1745.60- $60,000 annually; depending on education/qualifications/experience
