Overview

TRC's Research and Consulting (R&C) team, within the Advanced Energy practice, is focused on developing and deploying decarbonization and clean energy solutions for our clients - utilities, non-profits, local governments, and state and federal agencies. R&C is a multi-disciplinary research-based consulting team that helps internal and external clients develop and optimize scaled clean energy solutions grounded in technological, economic, policy, market, and customer insights. Our research consulting projects are focused on how advanced energy solutions like energy efficiency, demand management, distributed energy resources, emerging tech, microgrids, storage, and electrification can help drive the clean energy transformation.

R&C's Research Engineers conduct research and analysis to help address clients' needs through discrete, funded projects focused on advanced energy solutions. This includes designing, implementing, and communicating insights from a wide range of research and analysis approaches, drawing upon advanced energy industry subject matter expertise, and helping clients understand how to use these insights.

Directors are senior management professionals and industry leaders who oversee sophisticated research and consulting projects; build our team's expertise in Tech-to-Market, Codes and Standards, Market Transformation, and the clean energy industry; and lead in the evolution of our business. No project is the same, and Directors are responsible for lots of different types of work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Directors will design and oversee large and complex technology research, codes and standards, and market transformation projects; manage teams and guide staff development; and grow R&C service offerings including client management and business development. This position requires the ability to communicate effectively and coordinate with internal technical team members and external customers

Responsibilities

While the focus will vary based on business needs, the overall responsibilities of Directors are as follows:

* Team leadership

o Play leadership roles related to developing and executing team strategy, internal training, process improvements, and internal initiatives
o Understand and reinforce the team's strategies, priorities, and internal initiatives through individual actions as well as team communications
o Identify opportunities and coach team members in how to support the team's strategic priorities and initiatives
o Contribute to a healthy team culture by promoting a collaborative work environment, embodying a growth mindset, and recognizing team members

* People management

o Manage up to five mid-career to senior team members and other people managers, including managing workloads, training, and career development
o Act as mentor and coach to develop internal talent for the future of the practice, providing constructive feedback proactively using thoughtful approaches and promoting a growth-mindset and open feedback on the team

* Research design and project planning oversight

o Oversee and support development of research approaches and project plans that will address clients' needs, incorporating own subject matter expertise and collaborating with other subject matter experts from across organisation to ensure that projects incorporate industry-leading leading comprehensive, multi-disciplinary solutions.
o Instruct and oversee team members in the design and implementation of research and consulting projects
o Coordinate with methodological and domain experts from across the organization to ensure quality of research

* Project portfolio oversight

o Oversee multiple projects that form a portfolio of work in a particular subject area, or oversee a regional or client specific portfolio of projects
o Ensure that clients are satisfied with team members' communication and project delivery, proactively escalating clients' problems to senior management
o Anticipate client needs and market trends, then proactively propose research and consulting to meet those needs

* Industry Expertise

o Maintain and expand expertise in building technology, codes and standards, market adoption, and the clean energy industry through technical reading and participation in local and national professional organizations
o Educate internal team in areas of expertise and create opportunities to connect areas of expertise to other use cases
o Identify and implement new approaches to improve and expand our Tech-to-Market, and Codes and Standards, and Market Transformation expertise

* Business development

o Contribute to proposals, including leading development of large complex proposals
o Identify opportunities to expand work with existing and new clients, as well as partnership opportunities


Qualifications

Minimum qualifications are those an applicant must possess to be considered a candidate for the position.

  • PhD with 10+ year of experience, or Masters degree with 12+ years experience, or Undergraduate degree with 15+ years experience
  • Applicable degrees include Architectural Engineering, Engineering, or other relevant fields focused on engineering research,
  • Demonstrated competency and experience in building science, energy codes and standards, distributed energy resources, and/or applied technical research (in years of experience corresponding to degree, as listed above)
  • Demonstrated expertise and leadership in the fundamentals of research methods and design.
  • Demonstrated competency and experience overseeing delivery of team-based research and/or consulting projects.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and can-do attitude.
  • Demonstrated ability leading teams and people management
  • Capable of maintaining a high energy level to handle a dynamic, fast-paced workload.
  • Established expertise with utilities or the clean energy sector, including one or more of the following:
  • Building science and/or clean transportation
  • Energy efficiency, demand management, and/or other distributed energy resources
  • Utility programs and regulation
  • Clean energy technologies and/or building systems
  • The clean energy market
  • Energy codes and/or appliance standards
  • Established research experience with methods including one or multiple of the skills below:
  • Surveys or In-depth interviews
  • Data analysis and statistics
  • Field technology pilots
  • Laboratory studies
  • Building energy modeling
  • Code and standards development
  • Literature review
  • Research presentation

Compensation: In accordance with local law, the below salary range is applicable for the job and location associated with this requisition. Compensation will vary based upon experience, education, skill level, geographical location, and other compensable factors.

Other Compensation: Employee may be eligible for participation in the Company's annual Discretionary Bonus Program which is contingent on Company, Business Segment, and Individual performance against Key Performance Indicators which vary by year and employee.
