AES Clean Energy is seeking a Senior Engineer, who has a long history of working with SCADA systems, to support engineering, operation, and asset management teams by taking ownership of wind plant performance in the early phase of the project. The engineer will join a multi-functional team that provides engineering support for wind projects and has a tremendous growth opportunity.

The Performance Engineer serves as the subject matter expert for technical and engineering matters related to warranty power curve test, turbine commissioning, optimizing asset performance, and tuning the turbine parameters across our fleets. Excellent communication, task management, and planning skills are needed, in addition to technical breadth.

The successful candidate will have a depth of experience in the operation and analysis of wind generation systems, including a thorough understanding of meteorological data, turbine performance, turbine control systems, and data acquisition systems.

While dealing with the SCADA systems is the primary qualification, the role will require the review of information related to standardizing the turbine fault codes and key performance metrics to build a performance monitoring dashboard. The successful applicant will be a part of a growing team and be able to learn from the team.

The position is in Louisville, CO, and may include up to 25% travel to project locations and partner offices. Full-time remote work is possible for a candidate with sufficient experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review turbine supply agreement (TSA), full-service agreement (FSA), service and maintenance agreement (SMA) during the project contract phase.

  • Coordinate and execute the warranty power curve test following the turbine supply agreement (TSA) and collaborating with Independent Engineers.

  • Review commissioning plans and reports for projects in construction.

  • Evaluate the turbine performances and parameters; and tune the parameters accordingly by working with turbine OEMs. Be proactive to solve turbine issues in the early phase of the project to mitigate the revenue loss down the road.

  • Identify, evaluate, and resolve turbine performance issues to maximize site energy production. Regular equipment monitoring can be wind turbine blades and towers, gearboxes, and electrical subsystems.

  • Understand the fault codes and take action as an SME to solve the issue. And understand the FSA terms and their implications.

  • "Close the loop" between asset management and new project development by recording and communicating issues with operating systems that can be prevented or mitigated through better design and tuning.

  • Compare the operational production to preconstruction estimates, and create a feedback loop for accurate preconstruction estimates, and develop a better performance monitoring strategy and tool.

  • Improve existing methods used to quantify plant losses and fleet availability. And implement innovative new designs and wake/load control strategies to enhance plant reliability and performance.

  • Assist other SCADA engineers to design, perform, and execute the plant controls during the development and commissioning phases of new assets and acquisitions.

  • Perform site operational compliance testing in accordance with regulatory body standards, documenting results.

Skills and Qualifications

Primary Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering or equivalent technical field.

  • 5+ years of professional experience in turbine operation and performance.

  • Familiar with the SCADA system, fault codes, and turbine reliability.

  • Minimum 5-year experience working with wind turbine systems.

  • Familiar with International Standard IEC 61400-12 and related wind design and performance standards.

  • Proficiency in Python programming.

  • Proficiency in SQL programming to query and manage data from SQL servers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in Engineering

  • Proficiency in data digitalization and analyzing large datasets

  • OSHA 10-hr or comparable job-site safety certification
