Tech Lead of Instrument Integration, Engineering - Lab Automation

Genentech
United States, California, South San Francisco
Dec 04, 2025
The Position

A healthier future. It's what drives us to innovate. To continuously advance science and ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need today and for generations to come. Creating a world where we all have more time with the people we love. That's what makes us Roche.

Advances in AI, data, and computational sciences are transforming drug discovery and development. Roche's Research and Early Development organisations at Genentech (gRED) and Pharma (pRED) have demonstrated how these technologies accelerate R&D, leveraging data and novel computational models to drive impact. Seamless data sharing and access to models across gRED and pRED are essential to maximising these opportunities. The new Computational Sciences Center of Excellence (CoE) is a strategic, unified group whose goal is to harness this transformative power of data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assist our scientists in both pRED and gRED to deliver more innovative and transformative medicines for patients worldwide.

The Opportunity

Within the CoE organisation, the Data and Digital Catalyst (DDC) organisation drives the modernisation of our computational and data ecosystems and integration of digital technologies across Research and Early Development to enable our stakeholders, power data-driven science and accelerate decision-making. As the Tech Lead for the Instrument Integration team within the Engineering - Lab Automation capability, you will guide the architecture and engineering efforts focused on developing and maintaining robust software systems to capture and process data from our vast number of laboratory instruments. This is a unique opportunity to shape our core instrument data strategy, empower our scientists with reliable and accessible data, and accelerate the discovery of transformative medicines for patients worldwide.

In this role, you will:

  • Drive and own the technical architecture, roadmaps, and delivery of reliable, scalable software systems.

  • Serve as the senior technical expert to a small, dedicated team of software engineers, providing technical guidance, design review, and setting a high bar for engineering excellence.

  • Be accountable for delivering scalable and reliable instrument data integration projects, connecting them seamlessly to our informatics landscape and enabling downstream scientific analysis.

  • Design, develop, and test robust, scalable, and maintainable software systems for interfacing with diverse laboratory instruments.

  • Partner with product managers and scientists to understand user needs and translate them into clear, actionable technical specifications.

  • Stay current with the state-of-the-art in instrument integration and data systems, applying best practices to inform architecture and design decisions.

Who You Are

  • B.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field plus 12+ years of experience in Biotech/Pharma, focused on building and deploying scalable software systems for scientific research.

  • Demonstrated a consistent record of outstanding performance and impact through technical leadership and deep, hands-on technical contributions.

  • Expert technical knowledge of principles related to distributed systems, data engineering, software architecture, cloud-native architectures, and system design.

  • Must possess the ability to define high-level technical architecture and execute complex technical work.

  • Deep knowledge of lab workflows and the drug discovery domain.

  • Direct experience interfacing with a variety of scientific laboratory instruments (e.g., liquid handlers, plate readers, microscopes, mass spectrometers) is essential.

  • Expert level technical background in cloud-native architectures (ideally AWS).
