Tooling Engineer

As a Tooling Engineer you be responsible for designing tooling to support current and future programs at PPG-Texas. This tooling comprises dies, molds and other equipment used during the manufacturing processes. You will be closely working with production, quality, and engineering teams to ensure the tooling has been designed for ergonomics, safety, and manufacturability. This is a hands-on position that will allow you to have input not just on the design of the tooling but also the function and how it interfaces with the manufacturing process.

You will report to the Engineering Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and validate tooling, fixtures, jigs, and gauges to support manufacturing and assembly processes.

  • Collaborate with product design, manufacturing, and quality teams to understand tooling requirements and constraints.

  • Conduct feasibility studies and cost analysis for tooling projects.

  • Create detailed tooling drawings and specifications using CAD software.

  • Oversee tooling fabrication, installation, and commissioning activities.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve tooling-related issues during production.

  • Implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance tooling efficiency, reliability, and safety.

  • Ensure tooling complies with industry standards, safety regulations, and company policies.

  • Manage tooling documentation, including design records, maintenance schedules, and inspection reports.

  • Coordinate with suppliers and vendors for tooling procurement and maintenance services.

  • Support new product introduction (NPI) by developing appropriate tooling solutions.

  • Provide technical support and training to production and maintenance personnel on tooling usage and maintenance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.

  • 1+ years as a Tooling Engineer or in a similar role within a manufacturing environment.

  • Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks and CATIA preferred) for tooling design

  • Experience with tooling design for injection molding, thermoforming, machining, or assembly processes would be advantageous.

  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and tooling principles.

  • Knowledge of materials, machining, and fabrication techniques.

  • Familiarity with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) and engineering drawings.

  • Project-oriented with a focus on continuous improvement.

  • Commitment to safety and compliance.
