Hornblower is seeking a Senior Engineering Marine Mechanical Specialist for our Seaward Services operation in Norfolk VA.

About You:

This person will be adaptable, dynamic, and embody Hornblower's RESPECT Service System.

About the Opportunity:

This role will be working with the Naval Surface Warfare Center, upon award of contract. The Marine Mechanical Specialist provides advanced technical expertise for mechanical systems on small military or support watercraft. Responsibilities include diagnostics, repair, overhaul, installation, and preventive maintenance of propulsion, steering, hydraulic, HVAC, and auxiliary mechanical systems. Supports vessel readiness, conducts equipment inspections, maintains technical documentation, and advises leadership on mechanical system performance. May mentor junior technicians and support engineering investigations or modifications.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:



  • Perform advanced diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on marine mechanical systems.
  • Install, troubleshoot, and service propulsion, hydraulic, HVAC, and auxiliary systems.
  • Conduct system inspections, preventive maintenance checks, and technical evaluations.
  • Document maintenance activities and update technical records.
  • Provide technical expertise during vessel readiness assessments.
  • Support engineering investigations, modifications, and upgrades.
  • Mentor junior mechanical technicians and support team training.
  • All other duties as assigned.


Requirements & Qualifications:



  • Associate's degree or equivalent trade certification in Diesel Technology, Marine Technology, or a related field, or high school diploma or GED equivalent with certification, such as Marine Diesel Mechanic Certification or Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) certification from two or more recognized marine industry leaders, including Caterpillar, Cummins, Detroit Diesel, Hamilton Jet, Mercury, Steyr, Twin Disc, Yanmar, Thrustmaster, Honda Marine, Yamaha, OXE, KaMeWa, Volvo, or Scania.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of experience in small watercraft mechanical systems, including testing, maintenance, repairs, operations, and troubleshooting; leading a mechanical team; and using technical drawings to assist in repairs and identify parts for purchase.
  • Merchant Mariner's Credential with a minimum engineer endorsement of Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED); must maintain and possess. Assistant Engineer or Designated Duty Engineer Endorsement preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of marine mechanical systems, diesel engines, hydraulics, and propulsion systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and manufacturer manuals.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software for reporting and documentation.
  • Effective leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills for team and operational coordination.
  • Authorized to work in the United States.
  • Ability to pass and maintain a drug and alcohol test in accordance with U.S. Coast Guard regulations.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance.
