Structured Cabling Technician II and Lead Technician

Job Summary

The Lead Structured Cabling Technician oversees the installation, termination, and testing of structured cabling systems for large-scale commercial and government projects. This role combines hands-on technical work with team leadership responsibilities to ensure projects are completed efficiently, safely, and in accordance with industry standards. The Lead Technician supervises installation teams, coordinates with contractors and project stakeholders, manages materials and labor planning, and ensures all work meets established quality and installation specifications.

Job Responsibilities




  • Install and route structured cabling infrastructure including CAT5e, CAT6, and fiber optic systems



  • Dress and route cables into IT closets, modular furniture, and outlet locations



  • Install cable pathways including J-hooks, D-rings, cable trays, and ladder racks



  • Perform cable management, dressing, and labeling according to established standards



  • Terminate cables at patch panels, jacks, keystones, and modular plugs (RJ-45)



  • Install and mount wireless access points, fiber ONTs, and network switches



  • Construct and organize IT closets including racks, trays, patch panels, and grounding systems



  • Perform fiber splicing, installation, and testing using industry-standard testing equipment



  • Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, and installation specifications



  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment in compliance with OSHA safety standards



  • Lead and supervise structured cabling teams to ensure quality and timely project completion



  • Serve as the primary on-site point of contact for contractors and project stakeholders



  • Conduct safety meetings and enforce adherence to worksite safety protocols



  • Manage materials, coordinate supply needs, and maintain inventory for assigned projects



  • Forecast labor requirements and allocate team resources effectively



  • Review blueprint revisions and communicate necessary changes to project leadership



  • Ensure all installations comply with BICSI installation standards and quality expectations



  • Provide hands-on training, mentorship, and performance feedback to team members




Job Requirements




  • High school diploma or GED required



  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in commercial structured cabling, low-voltage, or data cable installation



  • Strong understanding of BICSI structured cabling standards



  • OSHA 10 certification preferred



  • Scissor lift or boom lift certification preferred



  • Additional safety certifications such as fall protection or confined space training preferred



  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, and technical documentation



  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills



  • Ability to work at heights, on ladders, and in confined spaces



  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds



  • Ability to stand, walk, and perform physical tasks for extended periods




Work Experience




  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in structured cabling, low-voltage installation, or commercial data cabling environments



  • Prior experience leading installation teams or supervising job sites preferred
