Design Manager, Infrastructure

Tesla Motors, Inc.
paid holidays, flex time, 401(k)
United States, Texas, Austin
Oct 20, 2026
What to Expect

You will be a key member of the infrastructure team, leading the design and engineering of advanced, high-performance infrastructure projects (including manufacturing facilities, industrial plants, data centers, central utilities, and related building systems). This role requires delivering at pace in a demanding environment and calls for a highly motivated self-starter with a strong bias for action.

You bring strong engineering and architecture literacy: the ability to critically review drawings and models, challenge incomplete or deficient work, and recognize when packages lack readiness or required inputs. You focus on complete, coordinated 30/60/90/IFC-quality deliverables, as well as supplemental calculations, basis of design, P&IDs, SOOs, and similar documents that perform reliably in the field.

You will synthesize complex, often ambiguous stakeholder requirements into clear scopes and inputs that multi-disciplinary engineering and construction teams can execute. The position emphasizes strong design management of infrastructure engineering, with particular focus on building construction, MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing), CSA (Civil, Structural, Architectural), process systems, and interfaces to ensure integrated, buildable, safe, and operable designs.

What You'll Do
  • Lead design from concept through IFC and commissioning support, meeting schedule, cost, and quality targets
  • Translate multi-stakeholder requirements into clear scopes, priorities, and deliverables
  • Own the design management plan and communicate scope and interfaces to internal and external teams, documenting decisions and open items
  • Deliver concepts, IFB/IFP/IFC packages, specifications, and models for procurement, permitting, and construction
  • Drive the design schedule and proactively close risks, dependencies, interfaces, and changes before they impact progress
  • Lead technical reviews covering options analysis, value engineering, constructability, 2D/3D/BIM coordination, and management of change
  • Embed safety, operability, and maintainability into designs, and support construction administration through commissioning

What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's Degree in Architecture, Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, or Process/Chemical Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • Experience leading multi-disciplinary design teams in an A/E firm, design-build team, or owner organization
  • Proven track record delivering complex infrastructure design for manufacturing facilities, data centers, central plants, or industrial facilities. Strong MEP, CSA, and building construction experience required
  • Sufficient command of the major disciplines to coordinate them effectively, with a demonstrated record of issuing IFB, IFP, and IFC packages on schedule and to quality standards
  • Practical knowledge of constructability, design-build or collaborative delivery methods, and the design-to-construction interface
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong organizational ability, and the capacity to make decisions in fast-paced, ambiguous environments
  • Familiarity with BIM and digital tools, value engineering, and continuous improvement preferred
