Job Summary and Purpose:

The Bioinformatics Engineer will contribute bioinformatics analyses for the next generation sequencing (NGS) development group on a daily basis, help deploy publicly available bioinformatics tools, help write code for in-house bioinformatics tools, help analyze scientific data using computer tools, and work towards bringing AI methods into use.

The successful candidate will interact daily with laboratory scientists as well as need to learn and understand the basics of laboratory work. The daily tasks of the Bioinformatics Engineer will entail heavy data analysis with a focus on bioinformatics data analysis via Geneious R, publicly available bioinformatics tools and/or custom-made bioinformatics tools. The successful candidate will also be expected to analyze other forms of molecular or scientific data and perform statistical analyses on that data and/or use data to create AI-based models.

Responsibilities and Key Duties:

Bioinformatics

  • Create novel bioinformatics tools for molecular data analysis
  • Utilize current bioinformatics tools for molecular data analysis
  • Build and improve upon bioinformatics pipelines for molecular data analysis
  • Interpret bioinformatics data, draw conclusions, and prepare reports for end users
  • Create and maintain sequence database
  • Monitor sequencing network
  • Train colleagues on bioinformatics tools

Coding

  • Write code, scripts, and algorithms
  • Proficient in several computer languages, i.e. Python, JavaScript, Java, web design, CSS, R

Technical / Functional Competencies:

* Computer skills

o Linux operating system and command line - required

o Object oriented programming language experience (e.g. Java, Python, Go) - required

o Data analysis - Statistical analyses programs; R and/or R Shiny - required

o JavaScript and JavaScript frameworks experience - required

o Bioinformatics analyses experience - highly preferred

o Database design/administration experience - preferred

o Frontend design experience - preferred

o Backend design experience - preferred

o AWS, GCP, and/or Azure experience (equivalent offerings acceptable) - preferred

o Network administration experience - preferred

o Server administration experience - preferred

o DevOps tooling experience (e.g. Docker, git, CI/CD pipelines) - preferred

o Building Artificial intelligence models - highly preferred

o Microsoft Office or equivalent - required

  • Basic molecular biology principles - preferred
  • Ability to be trained in Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL) - preferred
  • Knowledge of animal infectious diseases - preferred
  • Effective communication skills - both written and verbal

Qualifications:

Education - B.S. and/or M.S. in Bioinformatics or Computer Science or comparable/related field - preferred

Work Experience - 3+ years in bioinformatics or computer coding (relevant non-work experience can be counted as part of the work experience)

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to read, write legibly, and communicate in English
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds
  • Visual inspection

* This position may require ~20% time for business travel
