AI Early College Data Science Intern (Pittsburgh, PA)

Smith+Nephew is excited to offer a dynamic opportunity for college students in their freshman or sophomore years to join our AI Center of Excellence as a Data Science Early College Intern within our Robotics and Enabling Technology business. This role is perfect for students passionate about artificial intelligence, data science, and robotics who are eager to gain hands-on experience in a collaborative and innovative environment.

As an intern, you will work on cutting-edge proof-of-concept projects, leveraging data and AI to deliver meaningful enhancements to Smith+Nephew products. You'll contribute directly to projects that help our patients live a Life Unlimited, while building foundational skills in AI and data science.

The ideal candidate is always curious but applies rigor to any problem they choose to solve. The candidate is able to work independently, but also in full collaboration with other team members. The position will be based in Pittsburgh, PA for about 8 weeks.

What will you be doing?

• Learn and Explore: Gain exposure to AI and machine learning concepts by researching current technologies and trends.

• Support Data Preparation: Assist in collecting, organizing, and preparing datasets for analysis.

• Basic Coding Tasks: Work on coding assignments using Python or similar tools to support AI projects.

• Collaborate with Team Members: Participate in brainstorming sessions and team meetings to understand project goals and contribute ideas.

• Develop Analytical Skills: Learn how to validate data models using simple statistical techniques.

• Hands-On Practice: Engage in guided exercises to build prototypes and understand AI applications.

What will you need to be successful?

• Education:

  • Enrolled as a freshman or sophomore in a bachelor's program for a relevant engineering discipline (i.e. Data Science, Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Computer Engineering).

• Experience:

  • Previous applicable intern, co-op, part-time or apprenticeship experience is preferred

• Passion for learning and exploration in AI and data science.

• Ability to problem-solve creatively and think critically.

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

• Willingness to take initiative and contribute to team goals.
