Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume): Bachelor's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Public Health, Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Biochemistry, or related field. Experience in operating equipment, carrying out test procedures, and/or using special methods for data collation and interpretation.
Preferred Qualifications: Six (6) months or more of hands-on research experience working within a microbiology laboratory setting with specific skills in PCR, RT-PCR, DNA isolation, RNA extraction, and/or general microbiology experience (bacterial culture). Experience in parasitology and/or neglected diseases of poverty.
Brief Description of Duties: Within defined test or analytical protocols, operate equipment, carry out test procedures, as well as collate and interpret data using special methods in support of a research project or program for Dr. Hovel-Miner in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology.
The successful incumbent will have excellent interpersonal skills, exercising strong organizational and time-management skills with an exceptional attention to detail. Essential for this role is the adeptness to work independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving. The ideal candidate has the ability to demonstrate professional competence in research activities.
Duties:
- Laboratory research in the form of experiments, assays, cell culture, and various analytical and computational methods. Including the analysis, recording, and reporting of data generated to the head of laboratory.
- General laboratory management, which includes media preparation, supply ordering, equipment ordering and upkeep, laboratory organization, record keeping, maintaining updated laboratory computers, and maintaining overall cleanliness and organization of the lab.
- Communicating research findings to lab members, both through direct conversations and in the form of lab meetings, to the department and university, in the form of seminars and poster presentations, and to the research community at large when invited by the head of laboratory to attend scientific conferences. This may include participating in manuscript or grant preparation to share research findings broadly.
