PFS Counselors are responsible for helping patients that are uninsured or underinsured apply for medical insurance through state and government programs. PFS counselors are an essential component of the healthcare revenue cycle through working with patients, clinicians, insurance companies, and healthcare administration to ensure patients have the appropriate coverage to receive medical services. PFS Counselors have a direct impact on patients' wellbeing by providing guidance and facilitating access to vital financial programs and services such as Medicaid. Additionally, they help analyze a patient's financial status and then provide suggestions for how the patient can cover healthcare costs. Successful employees have excellent customer service skills, ability to prioritize, possess strong verbal and written communication skills and thrive in a demanding atmosphere.

Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Performs financial assessment for individuals that are uninsured and underinsured to determine eligibility for state, federal and private insurance programs.
  • Completes insurance applications for programs like MassHealth, ConnectorCare, Health Safety Net and Medicare supplements when applicable.
  • Assists patients with the disenrollment process for Medicare Replacement plans and non-MA state coverages.
  • Registers patients by obtaining, verifying, and recording personal, demographic, and financial information in a sensitive and timely manner.
  • Verifies patient insurance coverage with third-party payers such as motor vehicle accident coverage and worker's compensation.
  • Collaborates with International Office where applicable.
  • Attends appropriate department and practice meetings.
  • Always complies with HIPAA and department regulations regarding patient confidentiality.
