Job Overview

The Medical Interpreter, Jr. is responsible for performing entry level interpretation and translation work while receiving training in the related principles, methods and techniques. The junior interpreter will be under the guidance and mentorship of a Medical Interpreter Sr. or department leadership.

Qualifications

  • EDUCATION - High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • EXPERIENCE - Bilingual fluency in Spanish and English (spoken and written)
  • CERTIFICATION(S) - Bridging the Gap Interpreter certification or equivalent will be required within the first six months of employment or completion of a program certificate in Translation & Interpretation within 12 months.
Responsibilities

POPULATION SPECIFIC CARE

No direct patient-care.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all the following essential functions. These examples do not include all the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.

  1. Develops skills for interpretation in the health field including behavioral skills, analyzing communication skills, transferring messages effectively, use of body language.
  2. Perform written translations, perform consecutive, simultaneous and sight interpretation.
  3. Interprets over-the-phone, via video, or in-person.
  4. Develops use of medical terminology by specialty.
  5. Receives training on the hospital's electronic medical record system to enter documentation on appointments, access patient medical records, provide statistics and other duties specific to the department.
  6. Assists patients and families in navigating through the hospital and its resources.

SCOPE AND LEVEL

Guidelines: Trains in the field and assists higher level personnel to acquire learning through practical experience.

Complexity: Performs routine and basic tasks common to the field. Procedures, methods, and techniques to be used are well established with options to be considered well defined. Tools, work aids, and materials to be used are specified.

Decision Making: Decisions or recommendations on non-standardized situations are limited. Brings non routine issues to supervisor. Problems that are not covered by guidelines or are without precedent are taken up with the supervisor.

Communications: Solid customer service skills and respectful communication abilities; comfortable being coached and mentored; open to feedback.

Supervision Received: Scope of service areas within the hospital, comfort with medical vocabulary, and varied appointment and encounter content will expand while being mentored and coached by a Medical Interpreter Sr. or above.

Salary Information

Annual Salary Range (Based on 40 hours worked per week): $39,890.57 to $59,835.86
Hourly Salary Range: $19.18 to $28.77

As part of our Total Rewards package, Children's Colorado offers an annual employee bonus program that rewards eligible team members based on organizational performance. If organizational goals are met for the year, the bonus is paid out the following April.

Children's Colorado delivers annual base pay increases to eligible team members based on their performance over the previous year.
