Brigham and Women's Hospital
United States, Massachusetts, Boston
45 Francis Street (Show on map)
Jan 03, 2025
Under the direction of the Chief Technologist and the Lab Director, the Neurophysiology Specialist will independently perform nerve conduction studies, quantitative sensory testing, autonomic function testing and duties to assist physicians in performing EMGs. The Neurophysiology Specialist will assist with teaching and training, lab operations, quality assurance, and new initiatives. This person may act as a charge tech responsible for coordinating the team's daily activities in the absence of the chief tech.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Patient care:
* Prepares electromyography (EMG) testing rooms with clean linen and all necessary equipment and supplies.
* Performs standard and complex procedures, both usual and less common nerve conduction studies (NCS).
* Prepares patient, applying a variety of surface electrodes as required; accurately obtains NCS; distinguishes between normal and abnormal results; describes all abnormal clinical manifestations observed during the test; recognizes physiological and non-physiological artefacts and takes appropriate steps to eliminate them.
* Manipulates instrument controls for optimal recording of electrical responses. Assists the neurodiagnostic physician with EMG studies by manipulating instruments.
* Assists physicians in the performance of tests by preparing and assisting with anxious, uncooperative or physically challenged patients (i.e. changing of clothes, refreshments, warming of limbs, bathroom needs, electrode removal)
* Maintains clean and functional clinical space and requests support from environmental services and MGB Digital as needed. Clean and stock carts for EMG rooms. Keeps equipment in clean, operating condition, detects instrument malfunctions and makes minor maintenance adjustments or reports needed for major repairs.
* Communicates appropriately with all care teams, including physicians. Communicates with responding clinicians to triage incoming orders as needed.
* Demonstrates positive patient-appropriate interpersonal skills with patients, physician staff, and other hospital/clinic staff members.
* Demonstrates knowledge of peripheral nervous system, diseases related to neurodiagnostic medicine, instrumentation, basic electrodes and electrical safety.
* Files, faxes or mails EMG reports and requisitions as requested.
Lab operations:
* Orders supplies when needed (clerical, lab, linen), including special orders. Keeps shelves neat and orderly. Assists with inventory maintenance of supplies. Cleans and maintains electrodes.
* Edits Epic templates for daily lab schedules. Updates EMG patient lists throughout the day
* Maintains division calendar coordinating personnel in the lab for outpatient and inpatient EMG studies on daily basis (technologists, residents, fellows, and attending physicians). Also maintains monthly and yearly calendars of lab personnel schedules used for patient schedule planning purposes.
* Complies with OSHA and JCAHO standards for Universal Precautions and electrical safety guidelines.
* Adheres to training regarding ethical responsibilities and confidentiality.
* Follows up on safety reports as they relate to the EMG.
* Attends department protocol meetings and meetings with hospital role groups to discuss workflows and operations.
Teaching, training, and general education:
* Participates in neuromuscular division educational activities whenever possible and contributes to the education of resident and fellow trainees.
* Leads training efforts for new hires for some of the more complicated procedures performed in the EMG Lab, including research EMGs following specific protocols, as well as autonomic testing.
* Supervises and participates in teaching junior personnel, residents and fellows.
* Continues education through journals, workshops, seminars and site visits.
* Participates in studies conducted for research purposes.
Leadership:
* Acts as a charge tech in the absence of chief tech, as needed. This requires the ability to organize the EMG schedule to ensure there is enough coverage for cases and the ability to recognize which cases are appropriate for staff members with varying skills.
* Serves as a resource and role model for EMG technologists, trainees and students, including patiently and properly training others at the EMG technologist level as assigned. Mentors junior staff.
* Assists with laboratory quality assurance. Responds to and files safety reports in a timely fashion.
