Security Officer 36 hour Nights

Overview: The Security Officer is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of the hospital's buildings, grounds, personnel, and patients. This dynamic role requires a proactive approach to identifying and addressing security risks, responding to emergencies, and maintaining a safe environment. The Security Officer will monitor security systems, assist in investigations, enforce safety protocols, and provide support in medical and emergency situations.

Key Responsibilities:

Interior Security and Safety Monitoring:

  • Perform periodic building and grounds tours, completing a minimum of four rounds per shift.
  • Examine doors, windows, and gates to ensure they are secure and free from tampering.
  • Confront and question unauthorized individuals; take appropriate action such as escorting, detaining, or contacting police based on the situation.
  • Use emergency fire equipment (alarms, fire extinguishers) as needed, ensuring readiness and appropriate use.
  • Record and report any safety violations, equipment failures, or malfunctions in plumbing, heating, or electrical systems.
  • Inspect persons for unauthorized weapons or contraband as directed by medical staff, confiscating and storing items when necessary. Notify police when appropriate.
  • Conduct metal detection and search procedures upon request.
  • Assist in the inspection of equipment and utilities (fire extinguishers, lighting, carpeting, stairwells) to ensure safety and proper functioning.

Response to Calls for Assistance:

  • Maintain a 100% response rate to all calls for assistance.
  • Respond immediately to calls for help unless addressing an emergency situation, documenting the details in the daily shift report.
  • Inspect vehicles for signs of theft or vandalism.
  • Enforce parking policies, issuing written warnings as necessary.
  • Monitor and address parking lot and sidewalk conditions during inclement weather; notify or assist personnel with sanding and shoveling.
  • Provide motor vehicle lockout services or coordinate with other agencies to assist with entry.
  • Offer jumpstart services as requested.
  • Regularly check exterior lights, reporting any malfunctions promptly.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Complete all required security-related paperwork by the end of each shift.
  • Submit incident reports, occurrence forms, injury reports, and fall occurrence forms as required.
  • Notify the Security Supervisor of significant incidents.
  • Submit time-off requests in a timely manner.

Incident Investigation and Support:

  • Initiate and complete accurate investigations for all security-related incidents, ensuring timely and detailed reporting.
  • Assist with patient care as directed, including obtaining food from Dietary, assisting with patient transport, or aiding with treatments and procedures.
  • Assist with the transport of cadavers to the morgue and collaborate with medical examiners and funeral directors as needed.

Adherence to Policies and Emergency Procedures:

  • Consistently follow departmental policies and procedures, maintaining compliance with all security protocols.
  • Participate in hospital disasters, fires, drills, and emergency situations, fulfilling the assigned role.
  • Respond appropriately to violent or psychiatric patients and contact the police department when necessary.
  • Coordinate helicopter arrivals and departures, adhering to safety protocols.
  • Provide crowd control and dispersal when needed, notifying the police department for assistance.
  • Assist with traffic control to support motorists as needed.

Security Equipment and Work Environment Maintenance:

  • Ensure careful operation and maintenance of hospital security equipment and reference materials.
  • Perform routine cleaning and preventative maintenance to ensure the ongoing functionality of equipment.
  • Maintain an organized and clean work area.
  • Report equipment malfunctions and coordinate with the appropriate personnel for repairs.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in security or related fields preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and remain calm in emergency situations.
  • Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills for reporting and interaction with staff and law enforcement.
  • Basic knowledge of security equipment, fire safety protocols, and emergency response procedures.
  • Ability to handle sensitive situations with discretion and professionalism.
  • Physical ability to respond quickly to emergencies and assist in patient care tasks.
