Blood Donor Technician

Under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager, Blood Donor Center, the Apheresis Technician I performs donor registration, screening, whole blood collection, automated platelet and red blood cell apheresis collections and preparation of components from collected whole blood. Provides excellent customer service. Balances production, donor care and quality requirements to meet annual blood collection goals. The Apheresis Technician I complies with all applicable state and federal regulations, as well as, hospital policies and procedures to ensure the safety of the donor and quality of the blood components.

Skills, Abilities, and Competencies Required

Donor Center Processes:

  • Provides donor greetings, directs donors to read educational materials, and assists with completing donor cards.

  • Conducts donor interviews to obtain accurate and complete medical history information.

  • Determines donor suitability using donor guideline manuals and department reference materials.

  • Performs whole blood phlebotomy and automated apheresis donations.

  • Labels sample tubes and collection packs, completes records, and handles products post-collection per FDA guidelines.

  • Prepares components in the component prep lab using centrifugation, separation, mixing, and labeling techniques, ensuring accuracy in data entry.

  • Records the results of all procedures performed using Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP).

Quality Control and Support:

  • Performs Quality Control and Preventive Maintenance procedures.

  • Assists donor center staff with managing reactions and medical emergencies.

  • Maintains equipment and stocks supplies both in-house and on buses.

  • Ensures donor information and records remain confidential as per MGH Privacy/Confidentiality/HIPPA policies.

  • Adheres to safety and infection control techniques.

  • Provides education and support to donors and the public.

Professionalism:

  • Exhibits professionalism in appearance and grooming.

  • Maintains prompt and regular attendance.

Licenses, Certifications, and/or Registrations:

  • Medical Assistant certificate or phlebotomy training (desired).

  • National Phlebotomy Certification (desired).

  • CPR certification (desired).

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED required.

Experience:

  • Previous patient/donor care experience or experience in a patient care or blood donor setting (preferred).

  • Proficiency in a second language (desired).
