Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The mission of the Department of Mathematics is to extend the frontiers of mathematical knowledge and the ways it is used in the real world, to disseminate that knowledge and to train the next generation of teachers and researchers, as well as those choosing careers with industry or government. The Department is committed to building and nourishing interactions with other units across the UNC campus and with academic and industrial partners in North Carolina's Research Triangle region, throughout the State and across the Nation. The Department maintains a strong research program as well as a comprehensive educational program. An active, healthy research environment is essential for training graduate students and enlivens undergraduate teaching by bringing students into contact with new and relevant mathematics, fostering fundamental mathematical skills and appreciation, and encouraging students to become the next generation of researchers and educators.

Position Summary

This Teaching Faculty position is for an initial term of three years and is renewable upon review. This position will be at the rank of Teaching Assistant Professor or Teaching Associate Professor, depending on the selected candidate's qualifications and experience. We seek a dynamic person who is prepared to teach and design undergraduate math courses, including courses in the calculus sequence in a large enrollment setting. The successful candidate will also be expected to serve as a course coordinator to manage a team of faculty and graduate student TAs, to perform administrative duties in support of teaching, such as managing placement testing or supervising undergraduate classroom assistants, and to collaborate with other faculty members engaged in similar efforts.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in mathematics, math education, or a closely related field is required. Demonstrated knowledge of scholarship in science teaching and learning, experience teaching at the college level, and experience in curriculum design are expected.
