PRIMARY PURPOSE/GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Assistant Dean and Director of Accommodations, Academic Resources, and Services will report to the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs. This position is responsible for the comprehensive oversight and administration of the Office of Accommodations, Academic Resources, and Services, which encompasses the planning, management, and supervision of personnel, programs, and services. The Assistant Dean and Director is charged with the interpretation of federal regulations, including Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 508 of 1998, and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, as well as relevant California state laws such as AB 77 and Title V, in conjunction with district policies concerning the rights of students with disabilities. The Assistant Dean and Director will provide guidance, counseling, and support to students with disabilities in achieving their academic aspirations. Furthermore, this position serves as a resource for students concerning disability support services, academic resources, tutoring, coaching, and other related initiatives. A key aspect of this role is collaboration and relationship building with both the Student Affairs and Academic Affairs divisions at Scripps College and Claremont Colleges Consortium partners.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide vision, strategic direction, assessment, anddaily management of the Office of Accommodations, Academic Resources, and Services (AARS).
  • Oversee the AARS budget, foster responsible fiscal management, and allocate resources in accordance with AARS and division objectives.
  • Supervise and guide AARS professional staff (2 Assistant Directors, 1 Office Coordinator).
  • Act as the College's main contact for students seeking information on Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accommodations. Work with AARS professional staff and various campus or consortium partners to address complex cases andensure timely delivery of services and accommodations.
  • Implement and maintain an AARS staff protocol for assessing students encountering academic difficulties (such as low-grade alerts) and/or ADA accommodation concerns.
  • Serve as the College's Section 504 Coordinator for students
  • Responsible for interpreting federal regulations, including Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 508 of 1998, and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, in addition to California state laws such as AB 77 and Title V, along with district policies pertaining to the rights of students with disabilities.
  • Develop procedures and practices to ensure adherence to local, state, and federal laws concerning student access to facilities and educational programs.
  • Maintains disability case records, including supporting documentation, according to university policies and applicable state and federal laws governing maintenance and disclosure of student records, protection of students' right to privacy, and the disclosure of personal student information.
  • Coordinate and oversee services for students with disabilities, which encompass housing, meals, academic support, faculty consultations, and student advising.
  • Conduct intake interviews, evaluate disability-related documentation, and collaboratively establish suitable accommodations with the student, in compliance with relevant ADA legislation and the requirements set forth by Disability Services documentation.
  • Provide ongoing consultation and assistance to faculty and staff to facilitate equal access to the learning environment and other opportunities. Facilitate interactive processes to resolve professor or student accommodation requests.Works with faculty and departments to implement appropriate accommodations in an instructional setting.
  • Serve in the Administrator On-Call (AOC) rotation, navigating and supporting students in crisis and participating in education and training for on-call participants.
  • Represent Scripps in various professional associations and at designated professional conferences.
  • Serve on College and consortia committees.
  • Collaborate with the Student Disability Resource Center and other partners within The Claremont Colleges.
  • Actively support for the College's Principles of Community and Principles of Diversity in the performance of job duties.
  • Other duties as assigned

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

Individuals must possess knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the position or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

  • The incumbent will possess strong advising, counseling, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to analyze disability documentation, including psychometric testing, medical documentation, psychological assessments, self-reports, and/or other relevant information to determine eligibility for specific, appropriate, and reasonable accommodations.
  • Knowledge of disability-related laws including, but not limited to, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, as amended, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Federal Fair Housing Act.
  • Must have knowledge of computer and assistive technologies, disability and accessibility practices and procedures. Experience working with Kurzweil, FM systems, note-taking services, test proctoring, and other assistive technology preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to help students develop optimal learning skills and present training and motivational programs to a wide variety of groups.
  • Must understand the variance from high school to secondary education accommodations.
  • Ability to handle multiple responsibilities and tasks simultaneously in a busy environment.
  • Must possess tact and sound judgment in dealing with sensitive and/or confidential matters.
  • Demonstrated successful leadership and supervisory experience.
  • Must have the ability to effectively communicate complex technical matters related to disabilities/accessibility standards, both verbally and in writing.
  • Must have strong analytical, project/process management, organizational, time management, and computer skills and excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of learning styles and Universal Design for Learning.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Master's degree from an accredited college or university,preferably in social work, higher education, counseling, rehabilitation counseling, education, with relevant coursework and experience in counseling individuals with disabilitiesor related field or any combination of education, training or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and ability to perform the job.

Five years of full-time experience in higher education is preferred, alongside a minimum of two years focused on students with disabilities.

Two years of supervisory experience is preferred.

HOURS & CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS:

This is a regular status, full-time, benefits-eligible, exempt position.

The regular hours for this position are Monday-Friday 8:00 am-5:00 pm, including some evenings and occasional weekends. Hours may vary due to the needs of the College or department.

Salary range: $90,000-$105,000 annualized. The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, andtraining.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Supervises the two Assistant Directors, one Coordinator, and student employees.
