Position Overview The Center of BioModular Multi-Scale Systems for Precision Medicine (CBMM) at the University of Kansas (College of Liberal Arts & Sciences) is seeking qualified candidates for a post-doctoral fellow position to work on a private sector and NIH funded projects. The candidate should have a Ph.D. in any of the following disciplines: biological science, biomedical engineering, or chemistry. Experience in microfluidics, nanofluidics, and gene therapies is preferred. The ability to perform Resistive Pulse Sensing (RPS), viral particle isolation and characterization, and fluorescence microscopy is desirable. The person hired into this position will provide leadership to graduate students as well. The research will focus on the development of resistive pulse sensors for determining the empty/full status of viral vectors used to carry gene therapies into diseased cells. The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical aptitude, strong verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and as a part of an interdisciplinary team. Job Description Research (75%). The Postdoctoral Researcher will carry out research that will involve making resistive pulse sensors in plastic chips, surface modification of the chips, then performing resistive pulse sensing (RPS) of rAAV particles to determine their empty/full status. These measurements will be done with recombinant adeno-associated viruses (rAAVs) and lentiviruses. In both cases, RPS and machine learning will be used to determine the empty/full status. The Postdoctoral Researcher will work with researchers at UNC-Chapel Hill and export the technology to the viral vector core at UNC. Graduate student supervision (10%). The Postdoctoral Researcher will work with graduate students to help them write papers, learn how to give presentations, teach them about RPS and gene therapies using viral vectors. Manuscript writing and review (10%). This includes writing papers for peer-reviewed publications, composing reports to funding agencies, and reviewing manuscripts. Dissemination and Outreach activities (5%). This activity is associated with presenting posters at national/international meetings, making oral presentations, assisting with science/engineering fairs locally, and helping in producing PR materials for our Center. Position Requirements The work location is on site at Gray-Little Hall, 2nd floor, Lawrence, KS Required Qualifications A Ph.D. in biological science, biomedical engineering, or chemistry with expertise in microfabrication and microfluidics. NOTE: To be appointed at the Postdoctoral Researcher title, it is necessary to have the PhD in hand. Appointments made without a diploma or certified transcript indicating an earned doctorate are conditional hires and are appointed on an acting basis not to exceed 6-months.
