Purpose
The Structural Biology Initiative at the Medical College of Wisconsin is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated individual to join our team as a Cryo-EM Facility Manager. As the Cryo-EM Facility Manager, you will be responsible for the efficient operation and management of our state-of-the-art Cryo-electron microscopy (Cryo-EM) facility. This position requires a combination of technical expertise, leadership abilities, and strong organizational skills.

Background
- Extensive experience in Cryo-electron microscopy techniques, including sample preparation, data acquisition, and data processing.
- Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting Cryo-EM instruments, such as microscopes, detectors, and associated software.
- Strong knowledge of image processing software packages, such as RELION, EMAN, or CryoSPARC, for data analysis and 3D reconstruction.
- Proven track record of managing and maintaining scientific instruments and facilities.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with researchers from diverse scientific backgrounds.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities and experience in supervising and training technical staff.
- Knowledge of laboratory safety regulations and practices.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
Primary Functions
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Cryo-EM facility, ensuring its smooth functioning and adherence to established protocols and safety guidelines.
- Manage the scheduling and coordination of instrument usage, ensuring optimal utilization of resources and minimizing downtime.
- Provide technical support and training to users on sample preparation, data acquisition, and data processing techniques.
- Maintain and troubleshoot Cryo-EM equipment, coordinating repairs and preventative maintenance as necessary.
- Stay updated with the latest developments and advancements in Cryo-EM technology, and implement relevant improvements in the facility.
- Collaborate with researchers and scientists to optimize experimental protocols and assist in data analysis and interpretation.
- Develop and implement quality control measures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of Cryo-EM data generated within the facility.
- Establish and maintain a safe working environment, adhering to all applicable regulations and promoting best practices in laboratory safety.
- Manage the facility's budget, including procurement of necessary supplies, equipment, and maintenance services.
- Train and supervise a team of technical staff, fostering their professional development and ensuring their adherence to standard operating procedures.

Required knowledge: Cryo-electron microscopy, biology, chemistry, mathematics, statistics, documentation, records management, data utilization, complex problem solving, critical thinking, resource management, and writing skills;
Skills and abilities: This will vary based on the hiring manager's preferences and should include things that can be learned or trained for.

Minimum Required Education: PhD

Preferred Education: PhD in biochemistry, biophysics, or structural biology
