Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Music, Music Performance, Music Education, Conducting, Education or related field. Three (3) years of full time experience directing or assisting in the direction, recruitment, administration, and/or development of a marching band, pep band, drum corps, drum line, concert band, wind ensemble, jazz band, and/or equivalent at the secondary and/or college level (student experience may be considered).

Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Music, Music Performance, Music Education, or Conducting, Education or related field. Additional years (4+) of full time experience directing or assisting in the direction, recruitment, administration, and/or development of a marching band, pep band, drum corps, drum line, concert band, wind ensemble, jazz band, and/or equivalent at the secondary and/or college level (student experience may be considered). Experience writing drill and/or arranging music for marching band. Experience working with a diverse student body. Experience with student leadership development.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Assistant Director of Athletic Bands is a visible and engaged full-time (12-month) position responsible for supporting a comprehensive NCAA Division 1 Athletic Bands program with a current membership of 185 students. This position reports to the Director of Bands and maintains important partnerships with the Departments of Athletics, Department of Music, and Offices within Student Affairs. Therefore, the selected candidate must possess strong communication, interpersonal, and management skills.
The Stony Brook Athletic Bands consist of a Marching Band, Varsity Band (Pep Band), Color Guard, Drumline, and Feature Twirler. The Athletic Bands perform at all home football games and select away football games; men's and women's home basketball games, and other select sports/activities deemed desirable by the administration; and at select regional and national athletic and community events, parades, and performance opportunities as determined by the administration.
The successful incumbent will exercise strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail. Essential for this role is the ability to work independently and as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem-solving. The Assistant Director will be key in coordinating and assisting with all administrative and teaching aspects required of a comprehensive NCAA Division 1 Athletic Bands program.
Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
Administration, Planning and Executing



  • The Assistant Director is responsible for assisting in the coordination of show conceptualization, design, instruction, and execution including but not limited to drill, visual arts, and the integration of guest performers (Spirit Squad, student group performers, etc.) for all Athletic Bands performances as well as for non-athletic special events.
  • The Assistant Director will assist in the teaching of all basic, intermediate, and advanced skill development and instruction required for high-level marching and pep band performance. The Assistant Director will assist in the coordination of preseason band camp and the sound execution of performances. The Assistant Director will help coordinate efforts and band performances which involve outreach to the local and regional community; this includes parade requests/performances, partnerships with local high school bands, participation in university and community service, charitable and philanthropic initiatives as well as the development and coordination of special events (High School Band Day, Alumni Band Reunion Day, Band Family Day, Varsity Band Spring Concert, etc.).
  • The Assistant Director will assist in the coordination of all marketing and recruitment strategies to maintain and grow the size and the quality of the bands, as well as to further position the program for regional and national success. This requires actively participating in year-round recruitment of high school band students, collaborating with University Admissions, and training and developing student band staff. It also requires establishing and maintaining professional relationships within the university community and with local school districts.
  • The Assistant Director of Athletic Bands will help identify, maintain, monitor, and inventory all departmental equipment & property including instruments, uniforms, and field equipment.
  • The Assistant Director is responsible for assisting in the coordination of departmental major programming initiatives, including the organization of a Preseason Band Camp, special band performance events (High School Band Day, Alumni Band Reunion Day, Band Family Day, Varsity Band Spring Concert, etc.), banquets, and educational programs that foster the development of students in the areas of leadership, civic engagement, multicultural competency, character, integrity, and team building.


Student Development and Supervision



  • The Assistant Director will assist in the coordination of the selection, training, development, and supervision of professional and contracted staff, as well as a strong team of student band office staff.
  • The Assistant Director plays a leading role in the important function of advising various leadership and student groups within the band including the Student Leadership and Kappa Kappa Psi. The Assistant Director also advises and mentors students on personal, academic, and professional issues, and serves as a resource and referral agent.
  • The Assistant Director will help coordinate plans and performances which involve travel to postseason tournaments. This will include assisting in the selection of student performers, working with tournament officials and producers, athletic marketing staff, and peer band programs from other institutions as well as helping to coordinate travel logistics.
  • The Assistant Director may be responsible for a range of administrative duties including but not limited to supervisory administrative duties (Student Band Staff evaluation, scheduling, approving hours, etc.), financial administrative duties (reconciling procurement card expenditures and annual band budgeting), performance and travel related administrative duties (arranging personnel, transportation, food, and lodging), facilities duties (reserving field space, equipment inventory), recruitment and marketing administrative duties (monitoring recruitment database, responding to student interest inquiries, assisting in the development of an outreach plan), and other administrative duties as assigned.


Professional Development and Committee Involvement



  • Participates in opportunities that promote their learning, growth, and development (i.e., classes, training, committees, webinars).
  • Contributes to the Division of Student Affairs and Stony Brook University by attending and/or supporting events, activities, and programs sponsored by areas within and outside the Office of Student Life (i.e., campus-wide traditions, events, programs).
  • Other duties or projects assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
  • Hours outside the typical work schedule may be required at times.


Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Non Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.

In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
