We are currently seeking a (1099) Dental Hygienist in Denison, IA for 10 hours a week.

The Denison Job Corps Center is seeking proposals for a Center Dental Hygienist, to work collaboratively with the Center Dentist and Dental Assistant to provide prophylactic dental services, promote oral health and wellness, early detection, diagnosis of oral health problems, basic oral-health care, dental hygiene, and prevention/education to the students at the Denison Job Corps Center.

Essential Job Duties:

  1. Provide support to the students in acquiring the oral health-related skills, knowledge, and attitudes that will make them employable.
  2. Providing basic dental care, and prophylactic dental services, as defined by the Job Corps Policy & Requirements Handbook (PRH 2.3 R3).
  3. Perform dental readiness inspection within 14 days of student arrival on the center, under the authorization of the center dentist and document all findings in the student health record.
  4. Following the Iowa state guidelines for the scope of practice of a dental hygienist, perform duties appropriate to the education and experience of the dental hygienist under the direction and indirect or general supervision of the licensed dentist.
  5. Also being knowledgeable of all PRH requirements, and all the center policies and procedures for the dental area.
  6. Educate students on the hazards and risks of smoking, vaping, and using smokeless Tobacco. (work closely with the TUPP specialist).
  7. Provide preventive services for dental disease and education on proper dental hygiene to all students. Oral hygiene instructions including chair-side counseling on brushing, flossing and nutrition.
  8. Enforcing appropriate student workplace behavior when students are in the dental office or waiting area.
  9. Promote opportunities for the students to practice the skills that will help make them employable.
  10. Provide support to the students in acquiring the oral health-related skills, knowledge, and attitudes that will make them employable.
  11. Provide and assist with Center-wide educational programs and events for both students and staff.
  12. Maintaining the accuracy and confidentiality of all required oral health and wellness records when they are in the subcontractor's presence.
  13. Ensure the maintenance, safeguarding, and confidentiality of all required dental records. * Accurate records of dental conditions and procedures must be maintained within the individual Student's Health Record (SHR) on specified Job Corps forms. All SHRs are to be kept in a locked area within the Health and Wellness Department.
    • At all dental appointments, the subcontractor shall have access to the students' health records. The student must be informed of the state of his/her health and dental needs, the dental condition classified according to the established priority system and the classification entered on the student's record.
      • Utilization of the Dental Forms supplied from the Job Corps Support Services Web Site is required.
      • All contact with students by any member of the dental team (Dentist, Hygienist, Assistant), must be recorded in the SHR.
      • All copies of the dental x-rays, to be placed into the SHR.
      • Written prescriptions for drugs and for dental laboratory procedures must be filled out as required by the Iowa State law and shall be noted in the SHR.
      • Document all student visits, services and education provided in the student's health record.

14. Assist Dental team in keeping the dental operatory, lab, offices, storage areas, and hallways clean and sanitized daily.

15.Process own instruments and tray set-ups, and assist in keeping the dental areas Clean sanitized and orderly as directed by the Center Dentist.

16. Work closely with the Wellness Director and Center Dentist(s) to ensure the previously listed services are provided to job corps students.

17. Collect data and prepare reports as required by the Center Director and/or the Department of Labor.

18. Cooperate with Corporate and Regional Office for Center Assessments.

19. Maintain the accuracy and confidentiality of all required oral health and wellness records when they are in the subcontractor's presence.

20. Comply with all infection control policies and procedures.

21.Provide current copies of professional certifications and professional malpractice insurance annually.

23. Must maintain knowledge and compliance with all dental hygienist practice laws and standards of practice for the state of Iowa.

Qualifications Include:

  • Licensed Dental Hygienist
  • Active, unrestricted license to practice in Iowa
  • Copy of current CPR
  • Must have experience working with disadvantaged youth
  • Job Corps experience preferred
  • Knowledge of mental health issues of disadvantaged youth
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, and government regulation
  • Strong assessment skills
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule
  • Excellent communication skills - verbal, written, and listening
  • Must have a valid Iowa driver's license with acceptable driving record
