POC Technologist - Portland, ME - Monday - Friday 8:00AM-4:30PM

The Point of Care Technician is responsible for complex duties in the Point of Care testing as well as performing and recording a broad range of more complex laboratory tests within the department.

Pay Range: $33.07+ per hour

Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, certifications obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered. Successful candidates may be eligible to receive annual performance bonus compensation.

  • Under the general direction of the Medical Director of Point of Care Testing and the Quality Management and Safety Specialist the POC Technician is responsible for the development and maintenance of an integrated system for Point of Care.
  • Assists the test sites in the selection and implementation of standardized procedures, policies, methods, training, competency standards, and competency assessment tools, and in establishing procedures, policies and patient correlation studies as necessary.
  • Works with test site managers at HUMC facilities to assure adequate documentation and compliance with CAP, Joint Commission, and CLIA '88 regulation.
  • Schedules and/or performs semi-annual instrument test correlations as dictated by test complexity categories.
  • Acts as a liaison to coordinate activities within a diverse organization and can collaborate effectively with patient care providers and support staff at all levels.
  • Supports the POC test site in the performance of patient testing, quality control, and documentation.
  • Prepares and updates documents and SOPs as needed for inspections and/or accrediting agencies.
  • Works with Biomedical Engineering and Information Technology departments in repair and troubleshooting issues when necessary.
  • Coordinates the analysis of CAP PT/CAP Quality Cross Check unknown specimens at POC test sites by qualified staff.
  • Works with the appropriate clinical and support personnel, test-site managers, distributors, and vendors in evaluating new requests for point of care testing.
  • Monitors and follows up on point of care testing interface issues.
  • Participates as a member of a laboratory inspection team as needed.
  • Trains newly assigned employees.
  • Maintains complete and accurate records, i.e., instrument worksheets and maintenance sheets as needed.
  • Maintains an adequate level of supplies.
  • Performs inventory control and ordering as needed.
  • Checks and standardizes reagents.
  • Performs all system functions necessary to achieve the timely reporting of results.
  • Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, language, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.).This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.)
  • Lifts a minimum of 40 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 50 lbs. and stands a minimum of 6 hours a day.
  • Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Work Experience:

  • Associate degree.
  • ASCP or equivalent eligible.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to work under minimal supervision.
  • Proficient in scientific understanding of laboratory practices, in particular quality control and quality assurance.
  • Correlates and understands the theory of complex testing procedures including associating the results to patient diagnosis and clinical condition.
  • Knowledgeable and competent at all tasks as delineated in the job description of the Med Technician II.

Preferred Work Experience:

  • Previous hospital experience.
  • POCT experience.
  • Certified as MLT (ASCP) or CLT (NCA).

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Lifts a minimum of 40 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 50 lbs. and stands a minimum of 6 hours a day.
  • Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies.
