Organizational Unit Overview
East Carolina University ( ECU, https://www.ecu.edu), a member of the 17-campus University of North Carolina System, is committed to being a national model for student success, regional transformation, and public service. Through education, research, health care, community engagement, cultural enrichment and more, ECU enhances the quality of life for our students, our state, and our world, and launched an exciting strategic plan for 2023-2028, Future Focused - Innovation Driven (https://strategicplan.ecu.edu).
ECU enrolls about 27,000 students annually, with over 5,500 pursuing graduate and professional degrees. ECU is classified as a R2-Doctoral/Research-intensive University and is located in Greenville, NC (pop. 92,000), which lies 80 miles east of Raleigh and a short distance to the Atlantic coast. A thriving small city and regional center for education, health, and the arts, Greenville offers a college-town atmosphere and is a great place to live, work, play, and visit. It has a cost of living more than 10 percent below the national average and boasts a vibrant Downtown district with restaurants, breweries, and shopping. Greenville hosts a variety of festivals throughout the year and offers numerous recreational opportunities, including access to the Tar River, more than nine miles of greenways, nearly 30 parks and recreational facilities, and a growing arts scene.
The Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences ( https://thcas.ecu.edu/) is home to 16 academic departments, a number of research centers including the Center for Survey Research ( https://surveyresearch.ecu.edu/), Geographic Information Science Center (https://gis.ecu.edu/), and the Water Resources Center ( https://water.ecu.edu/), as well as over twenty inter- and multi-disciplinary programs ( https://thcas.ecu.edu/undergraduate-programs/).
The Department of Geography, Planning and Environment ( https://geography.ecu.edu/) is a diverse, research-active, and collegial unit committed to cultivating a welcoming and nurturing culture of belonging and opportunity for all faculty and students. We offer four undergraduate B.S. degrees (Applied Atmospheric Science, Geographic Information Science and Technology, Geography, and Community and Regional Planning) and two M.S. degrees (Geography, and Planning and Development). Department faculty have a strong track record of regionally relevant research and community engagement and outreach activities. The department is home to the Center for Geographic Information Science, which promotes the development and application of geospatial data and technology in support of the University's teaching, research, and outreach missions.
The department is currently undergoing an exciting strategic reorientation in collaboration with the Department of Geological Sciences, and is on track to become a new combined Department of Earth, Environment, and Planning in 2025. The new academic unit would be home to 22 faculty members and welcome existing degrees in Geology at the undergraduate and graduate level. Establishment of an undergraduate degree in Environmental Studies has been proposed, building on a similar program of study offered through the college's Multidisciplinary Studies degree. The new unit will provide ample opportunities for collaboration across the ECU campus. This includes ongoing participation in ECU's Integrated Coastal Sciences PhD program, and research collaborations with Departments including Biology, Coastal Studies, Economics, Engineering, English, Public Health, and Recreational Sciences.
